2017 Legislative Session is Underway
Our fight for prescriptive authority is moving forward!
The 2017 Legislative Session is underway. CNPA and UB College of Naturopathic Medicine are making progress in our effort to bring prescriptive authority to Naturopathic Doctors in Connecticut. We very much need you to contact your State Representative and State Senator in support of the proposal.
The Department of Public Health has issued their report of last summer’s working group on prescriptive authority for NDs. The document outlines discussions that occurred as well as various options for implementing the change.
Our next step is to ask the Public Health Committee (PHC) to include our prescriptive authority language in HB 7222: ‘AN ACT CONCERNING THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH’S VARIOUS REVISIONS TO THE PUBLIC HEALTH STATUTES’. This legislation is a “must-pass” bill that contains dozens of changes to the public health statutes.
- We will propose a structure that provides additional pharmacology education for NDs who wish to prescribe.
- There will be a formulary that will be subject to negotiation. Opiate drugs will not be included.
- One option that has been discussed is to have a time limited collaborative relationship with an MD, DO or an APRN for an ND who prescribes.
- Tell legislators that you have the education and training to do this now. You see patients and can diagnose their illness, but cannot write a prescription to treat it when needed. Be sure to tell your legislators that NDs having prescriptive authority is a major benefit to the citizens of CT because it eliminates delay of treatment, duplication of service and provides more primary care services to the patients of Naturopathic physicians.
Please ask your legislator to support adding prescriptive authority for NDs to HB 7222
If you are represented by a legislator who serves on the PHC, please contact them and ask that they support adding prescriptive authority for NDs to HB 7222. Tell them the issue will be raised at the March 20th public hearing.
If your legislators are not a member of the Public Health Committee, you can still contact them with a full update on the issue. Ask your legislators to contact the committee leadership in their party and request the leadership legislator(s) support this request.
